<p>I am going to be honest here, at the risk of sounding totally naive. I had no idea that it would ever be something read by more than a dozen people.</p>
<p>I still can’t believe it’s my full time job now. I feel so honoured to be a part of so many people’s lives and I treasure that so much. The best part of my day will always be interacting with readers</p>


When you started your blog Fashion Foie Gras in 2009, did you have any plans (or idea!) that it would get to this stage?

<p>When FFG first started, it was a fashion news blog and it was a rather controversial look at what was going on. So the byline was “fashion news force fed daily,” hence the name.</p>
<p>It also fit as the fashion world, at the time, was still all about a skinny ideal and the idea of force feeding for a luxury product seemed ridiculous and perfect for what I was writing. No geese have ever been harmed in the making of FFG  😉</p>


Out of curiosity, why is it called Fashion Foie Gras?

<p>I think it takes time and patience. There are about 100 photos taken for every one shared and I do 90 percent of the work on my own with a tripod! I find it’s more natural. It’s just me and the camera.</p>


You take incredible pictures and we love your Instagram feed! What are your tips for getting the perfect fashion photos?

<p>Definitely summer. It’s a season where you can throw a dress over your head and run out the door. Easy as pie!</p>


4. What's your favorite season when it comes to fashion?

<p>I could never ever choose. I am a product of the two and I love that.</p>

8. Louis Vuitton or Gucci?

<p>My favourite trip will forever and always be a safari to Africa with the four seasons! It was insane. Just insane.</p>
<p>Every single moment was magical and unbelievable. I still look at pictures and can’t believe it happened. We actually had guides that took us back to our rooms every night to make sure no lions were in our paths.</p>


9. You've travelled to some amazing places with FFG. What was your favorite trip and why?

<p>I think we give it power. I have never minded it. In an ideal world, it would be nice if there were no size division, just sizes. But I think right now it’s just a way to describe extended sizing.</p>


10. What do you think of the term plus size in the fashion industry? Should we still use it?

<p>This is a hard one. It’s taken me decades to finally be comfortable in my own skin. I think today we are on the cusp of a real body revolution. But, it’s still tough.</p>
<p>Every morning I get up and am thankful I have a body that has all it’s working parts and gives me the chance to live my life each and every moment. That’s a blessing and I’ve stopped looking in the mirror and seeing what it’s not, and instead I see everything it is and can do.</p>

11. What's your advice for women who struggle with body confidence?

<p>In 2009, Emily Johnstone started her blog Fashion Foie Gras as a source of daily fashion news that soon evolved into her personal account of fashion, lifestyle and travel across London, UK and her original home of Beaufort, South Carolina. <div>Sneakers over heels EVERY day! I have been collecting sneakers since I was 16 and I only wear heels if it is an absolute must. I think whoever invented heels must&#8217;ve been a little bit crazy.</div>

</span>I think my hair looks better when it&#8217;s done, but I&#8217;m SO lazy when it comes to hair! I always plan to do it properly and end up putting it into the same old messy bun every day.</div>

<div>Can I say both? It just depends what mood I am in, I love sweet and savoury, but if I HAD to choose I would probably say savoury because that way I could have a chocolate pastry lol.</div>

<div>Personally I prefer bikinis! I think it&#8217;s because I always thought I couldn&#8217;t wear one due to my size. So now when I do wear one I feel so free and liberated! Kinda showing a middle finger to societies rules!</div>

</span>My best style tip would be add a belt to your fit! It can take a basic frumpy outfit to the next level by giving you a silhouette and also gives you a chance to experiment with cute accessories!</div>

</span>My favourite brand right now is probably <a href="https://www.insyze.com/browse/womens-clothing/">Fashion Nova</a>, just because I feel like they are the only brand that have clothes which are truly my style. Everything is so fashionable and affordable and i&#8217;m all about being boujee on a budget!</div>

</span>My tips would be, don&#8217;t be disheartened if you feel left out when shopping at certain stores. The lack of clothing available to us only gives us a chance to get more creative. Shop at thrift stores, try out mens clothing and style it up!! Accessories are your best friend when you&#8217;re making do with what little you can find!</div>

8. Any shopping tips for plus size women?

<div>Untouched! I used to heavily edit my photos to the point I looked like a different person! Now the only retouching I do is fixing the lighting etc if the picture quality is bad!</div>

9. Facetune or untouched?

<div>I would say, stop worrying and living for everybody else. I used to live my life telling myself &#8220;when I lose weight I will do this&#8221; stop waiting to live your life! Start living now. Work on what&#8217;s going on inside you and it will all fall into place. Find what makes you feel negatively about your body and remove it from your life. And remember, social media ain&#8217;t real!!</div>

10. Advice for plus size women who are struggling with body image and confidence??

<div>I have toooo many clap backs, but honestly recently I&#8217;ve realised the best clap back I can give someone is love and light. Anyone who speaks negatively about someones body clearly has issues within themselves. So&#8230; though you may wanna go off on a b*tch, just remember boo she&#8217;s clearly going through it! Send them some love.</div>

It separates us from everyone else and keeps a sort of stigma around us. I wish we could all just scrap the labels and let everyone and every size enjoy fashion.</div>

12. What's your opinion on the term 'plus size' - should the fashion industry use it?

</span>I get so many messages from followers I couldn&#8217;t pick just one! But it still amazes me when people message me to say that I have changed their lives! I am just documenting my journey on social media so the fact it&#8217;s able to help people who are going through what I was going through is just unbelievable to me! I&#8217;m so glad I can be something positive for my followers.</div>

13. What's the best message you've received from one of your followers on Instagram?

</span>I feel sexy all the time! When i&#8217;m naked, when I get new clothes, when I&#8217;m in the shower! I&#8217;m comfortable in my body and i&#8217;ve finally come to the realisation that I can be fat and sexy at the same time.</div>

14. When do you feel most sexy?

</span>I would love for my YouTube to grow as it&#8217;s been a goal of mine since I was a little girl, I just never had the confidence to start it! I&#8217;m currently working on starting my own business and I wouldn&#8217;t have been able to do that if my Instagram and YouTube didn&#8217;t grow so I am extremely grateful! I would love to just keep growing my social medias and helping as many people as I can by sharing my story!</p>

<p><strong>How do you feel about the term plus size in fashion?</strong> I really don’t care. It’s easier for me to find the range if “plus size or curve” is indicated. I have no limit, I shop in standard range too.</p>

How would you describe the 17 Sundays style?

<p><strong>Claire:</strong> Australian life is our inspiration, how we live in the beach towns and the cities, We are lucky to live in Melbourne to experience 4 distinct seasons. Every change of season brings new energy and new wardrobe requirements.</p>

What are your biggest inspirations for your designs?

<p><strong>Claire:</strong> We have only been working on 17 for 7 years but it has been a registered company for 10.</p>
<p>We have had many highlights we have achieved a lot of ‘firsts’ as  a plus size brand. As a fashion theory tragic my highlights were having our Melbourne made bespoke denim boiler suit called into VOGUE USA for ranging.</p>
<p>Also having 2 post grad fashion students at RMIT write their thesis on our brand with particular focus on our “Pretty Vacant” shoot with Lily Cummings and Sophie Sheppard.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Nikala:</strong> All of that too plus achieving the sales success we have as an independent brand with no corporate backing.</p>

Next year marks 10 years of 17 Sundays - what's been your proudest moment so far?

<p><strong>Claire:</strong></p>
<p>Really impressed with the evolution of plus, there are so many brands giving it a go. I think the most impressive for me is Forever New. I love the care and consideration they have put into their ranging, its thoughtful and  on brand.</p>
<p>Coming from a long career in the highly competitive denim category, product and brand depth evolves from competition and the more companies try for plus the more talent is attracted and product is elevated and the whole category benefits.</p>
<p><strong>Nikala:</strong></p>
<p>Also The acceptance of plus size models into mainstream have helped bring the glamour and aspiration and have definitely brought plus size category  into a legitimate fashion space.</p>

How do you think plus size fashion has evolved in the last 10 years?

<p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Claire:</strong></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">My favourite pieces are always the denim, I love our denim styles. Jeans are a notoriously complex garment to wear comfortably regardless of size  as there are so many factors at play, I feel like we have solved many fit and comfort issues for plus size women in this category and  I’m so proud of our design, our cloth and most of all our quality.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Nikala:</strong></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">I get really excited to see the prints, we design and develop original artwork in house and I feel colour and print ranging is a definite strength of the brand so i&#8217;m excited to see the print ranging at the start of the season.</p>

Small Business Spotlight: Katie K Active

<p>Style. I wanted a way to share my personal style I had built over the years, and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tummysociety/">@tummysociety</a> was actually @mintsociety and ran by me and my best friend.</p>
<p>Over awhile we realized that what we wanted for our blog was different, so in our &#8220;Instagram Divorce&#8221; (don&#8217;t worry &#8211; we are still good!) I got custody of the blog, and it really turned into a celebration of all bodies, the body positivity movement and loving yourself, as you are, at this moment. @Mintsociety never felt like mine, so a few months ago i rebranded as @tummysociety, because my messaging is that all tummies are good tummies &#8212; and i want anyone to be able to come to my page and feel inspired to be just as they are.</p>


We love your Instafeed and style. Why did you first start instagram?

<p>San Antonio is such a vibrant city &#8211; and a lot of my locations are actually everyday places. There&#8217;s a yellow and red wall that&#8217;s a Mexican food place a few blocks from my house; i&#8217;ve taken pictures in front of pink doors that belong to a nail salon in spa &#8212; it&#8217;s just a matter of knowing your surroundings. It also helps that my boyfriend is a great, supportive scout and will save locations he finds to shoot at!</p>


How do you find such colorful locations?

<p>Oh &#8230; <i>everything</i>. I don&#8217;t know anything but Texas and have lived in most of the major cities at some point in my life. But being a native Texan comes with a big sense of pride, a natural friendliness and some of the best BBQ and Mexican food you can find.</p>


What's your favorite thing about living in Texas?

<p>I used to want to be a heel girl. But the power of comfort is something I can&#8217;t resist &#8211; Sneakers all the way.</p>


Sneakers or heels? 

<p>Done. I really feel better when my hair is done, and for me it&#8217;s just as much a part of the outfit as what you&#8217;re wearing.</p>


Hair done or messy? 

Ice-cream or French Fries? 

<p>If you told the fifteen-year-old Ranya that one day she would answer Bikini, she would really have an extension crisis. But i feel so good in a bikini, still self-aware, but you can really find the most beautiful, flattering and trendy two-pieces that just weren&#8217;t available years and years ago.</p>


Bikini or onepiece?

<p>Wear it. Don&#8217;t wait until you &#8216;lose the weight&#8217; to buy a beautiful dress. Don&#8217;t have goal clothes. Wear beautiful clothes at the current size you&#8217;re in and know you are worthy to wear whatever you want, at any size.</p>


What's your best style tip?

<p>Honestly I tow between <a href="https://www.eloquii.com/plus-size-dresses">Eloquii</a> and <a href="https://us.asos.com/women/curve-plus-size/cat/?cid=9577&amp;nlid=ww|clothing|shop+by+range">Asos Curve</a>. They both are brands that have paved a way for plus-size women to wear gorgeous, unique pieces and not the leopard, laced, over-sized tunics of the past.</p>


Favorite clothing brand and why?

<p>Get to know what silhouettes fit your body. Understand that the size on a garment is going to fluctuate from brand to brand, and you have to be okay with that. Find something that fits your body, makes you feel good, and don&#8217;t be afraid to take risks &#8211; build up to it! I&#8217;ve been someone who shies away every summer from showing my arms.</p>
<p>Even for someone who isn&#8217;t afraid to take a risk, i&#8217;m afraid to do something so tiny, so over the past two years i have becoming more and more comfortable with stepping out of the house, sans sleeve &#8211; It takes time to get comfortable with the things that scare you.</p>


Any shopping tips for plus size women?

<p>You are beautiful and you are worthy. Don&#8217;t spend the best years of your life not living because of a number on a scale. <a href="https://www.insyze.com/blog/what-is-the-body-confidence-movement/">Confidence</a> isn&#8217;t something you can buy; You have to work, you have to know yourself and over time it becomes easier and easier to know that you are exactly who you are supposed to be. One of the biggest things that changed my mindset was changing the visuals, meaning &#8211; i don&#8217;t follow a lot of straight sized women on instagram.</p>
<p>This may sound weird, but when you think about your life, especially before 2010, thin was it &#8211; You rarely saw anyone over a certain size on TV, magazines, modelling, movies &#8211; and that messes with you. You felt alone. But if you are surrounding yourself and what you see with people that look like you, and you see how beautiful they are, then you begin to understand that people look different and that&#8217;s so, so important to helping with your self-worth.</p>


What's your advice for plus size women who are struggling with body image and confidence?

<p>I&#8217;m indifferent really. I wish that there wasn&#8217;t a <a href="https://www.insyze.com/blog/can-plus-size-wear-bikinis/">plus-size</a> section, or an A+, or extended sizes  &#8211; We should just be included. But is that the most heinous thing? No. I&#8217;m just excited that stores i wasn&#8217;t able to shop at for years are now on board (hello J.Crew, Anthropologie, Madewell, H&amp;M &#8211; they&#8217;re getting there!)</p>


What's your opinion on the term 'plus size' - should the fashion industry use it? 

<p>I had gotten some really nasty message about my weight a few weeks ago &#8211; and it was the first time in my life anyone openly harassed me about my weight. I shared this experience on my stories and didn&#8217;t realize how much it actually hurt until I realized i hadn&#8217;t been posting &#8211; because I was scared. But reading the comments of those who i&#8217;ve connected with and being apart of a community that has been marginalized and ignored in the past, that&#8217;s the best thing.</p>


What's the best message you've received from one of your followers on Instagram?

<div>I think about it all the time. If i started a YouTube channel I do want it to be fashion-oriented, but i want to also share the other things i&#8217;m passionate about &#8211; Fighting for Civil Rights, Voter-awareness, politics &#8211; and I toy with how i could merge those worlds via a visual channel.</div>


Do you have a Youtube channel and if not, would you start one?

<div>A year ago it was about growth, working with brands, being an &#8216;influencer&#8217;. I&#8217;ve realized that i just want to be me. I want to share my style. I want to connect. I want to educate on issues i&#8217;m passionate about. I want to build genuine, and meaningful friendships. I want someone to look at me, and see that their body is similar, and know that if i can be confident, and happy, so can they. If i&#8217;ve helped just one person feel better about who they are, and all they can be &#8211; then i&#8217;ve succeeded.</div>

<p><strong>1.  You were recently featured in our Top 100 Plus Size Bloggers! Congratulations! Can you tell us about why you started your blog in the first place?</strong></p>

<div>Thanks so much for including me! In 2011 I was starting to question everything I was told about living in a fat body. After hiding myself for so long, I decided I wanted to live boldly. I started experimenting with my style and wanted to share it online, as part of both my own journey to self love but also to inspire others.</div>

<p><strong>2. Who/what are your biggest style inspirations and why?</strong></p>

<div>My style is always evolving but there has been a significant shift in the last year in my presentation. I&#8217;ve leaned into my masculine side and one of my biggest inspirations has been fellow Libra Jeff Goldblum, for both his amazing use of patterns and his incomparable swagger!</div>

<p><strong>3. How important is fashion as a means of identity as a non-binary person?</strong></p>

<div>Fashion is incredibly important to me as it relates to my gender because it is a vital part of presentation. I&#8217;m lucky as a mid-fat person that I have access to so many types of clothing from both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s sections. My non-binary friends who are sizes 5X and up don&#8217;t have access to the fashion they want to wear, and I really want that to change.</div>

<p><strong>4. One thing we&#8217;ve thought about recently, is how gender-norms are a societal construct. E.g with colors &#8211; &#8216;pink for girls and blue for boys&#8217;. What are your thoughts on this and do you avoid wearing certain clothes or colors as a non-binary person?</strong></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>Gender norms suck. One of the most beautiful things about my non-binary experience is that I&#8217;ve felt comfortable to experiment with my presentation because I no longer feel bound by gender norms. You asked if I avoided wearing certain colors or cuts but it&#8217;s really the opposite! Everything feels fair game!</div>

<p><strong>5. What is the biggest misconception people have about you?</strong></p>

<div>That I&#8217;m tall! I think my big personality makes me seem taller. Also that blogging is my only job. I actually work a full-time job at a nonprofit on the fundraising/communications team.</div>

<p><strong>6. Can you give us your favorite three androgynous style tips for plus size people?</strong></p>

<div>1. Find pants that make you feel amazing and buy them in every color.</div>

<div>3. You get to define what androgynous looks like for you.</div>

<p><strong>7. What are your favorite plus size brands and why?</strong></p>

<div>I love Eloquii for their amaze suiting options, can&#8217;t wait to be able to afford them. I mostly shop in the plus sections of stores like Target, Old Navy, and ModCloth because those are all in my price range. I also love ASOS for funky styles.</div>

<p><strong>8. How do you feel about the Body Positive movement in 2019? Has it changed for you?</strong></p>
<div></div>
<div>The body positive movement has warped so much it&#8217;s nearly unrecognizable. It&#8217;s been co-opted by straight size white women, turned into a mantra of self love, and is far from its original, radical purpose. I use the term &#8220;body liberation&#8221; now because bopo no longer serves me.</div>

<div><strong>Body liberation</strong> feels more accurate with the mission of freeing EVERYONE from the outside expectations of what a body should look or how a body should function.</div>

<p><strong>9. What advice can you give to someone struggling with their identity and body issues?</strong></p>
<div></div>
<div>Sometimes they are connected, but not always. In safe spaces, explore your identity. Play with your appearance, use different pronouns, follow people of all gender identities and expressions and question everything.</div>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>Body issues are so personal and it takes a lot of self reflection to get to the root. I&#8217;m still unpacking the trauma I&#8217;ve experienced living in a fat body. But I&#8217;ve found comfort in the fact that bodies are so diverse. Some people are fat and will always be fat, and that&#8217;s okay.</div>

<p><strong>10. Lastly, if you could teleport anywhere in the world right now &#8211; where would you go and what would you pack to wear?</strong></p>

<div>I would love to escape muggy DC August and go somewhere cooler. I&#8217;ve always wanted to visit Brighton, England. I would pack all of my cozy sweaters, jeans, and boots and go for chilly beach walks at sunset.</div>

<p>We discovered Maggie McGill on Instagram in the Fall last year after stumbling across a stunning photo of Maggie in a pumpkin patch. We immediately started following Maggie's account and featured them in our Top 100 US Bloggers To Follow last month. Maggie's quirky cool androgynous style provides major fashion inspo for people of all genders, including non-binary folks like herself! </p>
<p>Maggie doesn't adhere to gender norms when it comes to style and is also super inspirational in championing positive body image; so we jumped at the chance to interview them and ask some of our burning questions on style, identity and if the Body Positive Movement was one she was still a part of. </p>
<p>We've used both 'she' and 'they' as the pronoun to describe Maggie in this intro because as per her Instagram profile, it's "She/they but you can call me daddy ?"</p>
